Addiction – whether to alcohol, prescription medicine or to street drugs – is a chronic, progressive, fatal illness. What does that mean? Quite simply, if untreated, the substance dependent person will die of this condition.
Addiction takes many forms, and may result from untreated disorders (i.e., depression, bipolar, trauma, etc.).
Addiction may result from repeated exposure to a substance or a behavior, even without any co-occurring disorder.
Some addicts require medical detox – and some do not.
Some addicts respond to residential treatment – and some do not.
Some addicts are surrounded by supportive, loving families – and some are not.

Initially, we are far less concerned with why a client is an addict and much more concerned with stabilizing and preventing return to addictive use.
